Manitou Galleries and Legacy Gallery Santa Fe

Known for representational paintings, sculpture, prints, glass and fine jewelry, Manitou Galleries has been a Santa Fe institution since 2001. It expanded in 2011 with Legacy Gallery Santa Fe. Together, the galleries mount a series of solo and group shows that nod to Indigenous cultures and the ethos of the American West. Painter B.C. Nowlin leads Manitou Galleries' lineup for the month with his show Statements (through Aug. 15), which reflects on his concept of the “New West.” J.D. Challenger follows with Stories of the Ancestors (through Aug. 29). He said, “My hope is to inspire the viewer to seek out, learn from, understand and respect . . . the First People of this land.” Stone and bronze sculptor Oreland Joe (Navajo) rounds out the gallery's calendar with Healers and Medicine People (through Aug. 29). Legacy Gallery starts the month with the group show Forever West (through Aug. 14), featuring the work of Bill Anton, G. Russell Case, Glenn Dean, Jeremy Lipking and Howard Post. Jeremy Winborg follows with a show also titled Stories of the Ancestors (Aug. 26 to Sept. 5), with figurative work and Native American subjects.
