Wheelwright Artists Market

Friday, Aug. 19, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian 704 Camino Lejo 505-982-4636 wheelwright.org/artists-market

This year marks the second anniversary of the Wheelwright Artists Market, hosted by the museum's Case Trading Post. “The market was great last year, attendance was good, especially on Friday,” said Ken Williams, general manager of Case. “People are looking for different things around town, and this is a good way to get people to the museum. But first and foremost, it's about promoting the artists.” The market has about a dozen booths with 16 artists. Williams continued, “We have a group of really great artists, with both established and up-and-coming artists.

It's a great mixture that we're featuring. We'll have pottery, jewelry of course, basketry, katsina carvings and quillwork.” Proceeds go directly to the artists. Williams added, “Many of our artists are in our museum collection or are artists we've worked with for a long time. A lot of our artists did extremely well last year and are thrilled we made the decision to do it again this year.

It's a great feeling. It's a nice, quaint, charming atmosphere up here.”

As far as COVID-19 safety goes, the market is outdoors, and organizers follow the state's safety guidelines. “Each artist has their own booth, so it's spread out, not jam-packed,” Williams said. “Last year we did encourage masks, even outside. Some artists brought hand sanitizers. We want to be as safe as possible.”
