EXHIBITIONS FEATURING NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS

In August, the world-class works on view around the Santa Fe Plaza are just the beginning of the City Different's artistic displays. Galleries are spotlighting emerging and leading artists in every medium and from every background, including those who draw inspiration from their own Native American heritage and those with other muses. Read on for a selection of art exhibitions across the city.

Located in an annex on the Plaza, FaraHNHeight Fine Art represents emerging and leading-edge Native American artists. This month it leaves its intimate space to launch the fourth edition of Sovereign Santa Fe (Aug. 19 to 21). Gallery director Gregory Farah partners with guest curator Tony Abeyta (Navajo) for the art expo highlighting cutting-edge Indigenous creativity. The multimedia show features contemporary paintings, sculpture and fashion at La Fonda on the Plaza, in the Lumpkins Ballroom and Mezzanine above the lobby. Featured artists include such talents as Patrick CloudFace Burnham (Diné/Hopi), Jesse Raine Littlebird (Kewa Pueblo/Laguna Pueblo) and Brian Davidson (Diné). A portion of show sales benefit the nonprofit Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women.

FaraHNHeight Fine Art also partners with Bishop's Lodge for an artist-in-residence program. On the first Friday and Saturday of the month, select artists paint and discuss their work at the resort's stables on Bishops Lodge Road. On Sept. 9 from 4-7 p.m., join Santiago Rivera (Mescalero Apache) for a live painting experience and discussion of his new body of cubist work.
