Mamerto Sanchez Cardenas has lived an extraordinary life. He was born in the Ayacucho region of the Peruvian Andes. He began his career of more than 60 years as a folk artist by learning to work with clay from his grandfather, who was taught by a local healer. His ceramic sculptures, made in collaboration with his family, depict ornamented animals, saints, religious scenes and celebrations.
