EASING THROUGH TRANSITIONS
The American Cancer Society provides information on different transitions in your cancer journey, including when treatment ends. Visit cancer.org or call 1-800-227-2345. When you need additional support, turn to your social worker or check out local support group options on page 48.
REMISSION
In complete remission, all the signs and symptoms of the disease go away and cancer cells cannot be detected. Partial remission is when the amount of cancer in the body is reduced. Remission can last anywhere from many weeks to many years. One person could have many remission periods if there is a recurring cancer.
THE TRANSITION PHASE
It is common to feel lost once treatment ends. You may need to process emotions you put on hold while you were undergoing treatment. You might feel isolated, and that’s natural. This period is not so much about getting back to normal but figuring out what is normal for you now. Use the time without intense treatment to relax and recuperate from what your body went through.
SURVIVOR’S GUILT
Sometimes people feel a sense of guilt that their journey was easier than others. Know that your good health or recovery is never something to feel bad about. Reframe your guilt into empathy that helps you support others.
