After a long hiatus

Performing arts bring joy to summer

By Linda Marianiello

The performing arts in Santa Fe have been sorely missed for well over a year, and performers and audiences alike can’t wait for their favorite summer activities to resume. Many organizations plan to offer a combination of in-person and live-streamed events between late May and Labor Day weekend. Please check each organization’s website for updates, as schedules may change.

Programming and planning is under way for the Lensic Performing Arts Center to reopen for partial-capacity events.

The Lensic is excited to welcome back audiences safely and comfortably. Early programs will include classic movies and concerts by a number of popular regional artists. Executive director Joel Aalberts and his team are keeping an eye on the future, planning for more Lensic Presents events and organizing a calendar filled with programs by the many promoters, performing arts organizations and community groups that call the Lensic stage home. New events will be added as COVID-19 infections recede and regulations continue to loosen. Please keep checking in at lensic.org for virtual events and an expanding calendar of public performances.

New Mexico Performing Arts Society offers two live-streamed concerts during its 2021 Santa Fe Flute Immersion and Performance Workshops: On Monday, May 24, at 7 p.m. faculty members Melissa Colgin-abeln, Tracy Doyle, Linda Marianiello and Valerie Potter perform major works for flute and piano by Bach, Enesco, Mozart, Prokofiev and Reinecke in collaboration with pianist Nate Salazar. The closing concert, on Saturday, May 29, at 6 p.m., features class participants in pieces chosen especially for the weeklong event. The 2020-2021 season concludes with an opera concert on Sunday, June 27, at 5:30 p.m. Artistic director and Metropolitan Opera conductor emeritus Franz Vote leads eight of New Mexico’s finest professional singers in music of Bellini, Bizet, Puccini, R. Strauss, Verdi, Wagner and others. Find more info at nmpas.org.

Highlights of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival’s 2021 season include debuts by conductor David Robertson, violinist Leila Josefowicz, pianist Nicolas Namoradze and percussionists Colin Currie and Jacob Nissly. Returning artists include conductor Alan Gilbert, chansonnier H.K. Gruber, Berlin Philharmonic principal horn Stefan Dohr, pianist Kirill Gerstein and the Dover, FLUX, Miami and Orion string quartets. The festival also presents a complete cycle of Bach’s solo cello suites; commissioned premieres by Augusta Read Thomas, Helen Grime, Brett Dean, Sean Shepherd, Michael Seltenreich, Huw Watkins and the two participants in the 2021 Young Composers String Quartet Project, Lara Poe and Jack Hughes; and the New Mexico premiere of

Marc Neikrug’s chamber opera A Song by Mahler, directed and designed by Doug Fitch. The festival plans a combination of live performances and streaming events.

The Santa Fe Desert Chorale presents exceptional choral singers from around the country in rich and diverse programs. In summer 2021, the chorale’s annual festival is based on the theme of “unlikely partners.” In The Jew and the Gentile: Salamone Rossi and Claudio Monteverdi, SFDC celebrates the musical mastery of two early Baroque composers from diverse backgrounds, whose paths crossed at the court of Mantua. In Roaring ’20s, great concert hall works of a century ago stand side by side with arrangements of popular music and jazz standards from the Great American Songbook. East Meets West pairs contrasting works by Asian and American composers, including a new work for mixed chorus and tabla by SFDC’S composer-inresidence, Indian American musician Reena Esmail.

The Santa Fe Opera’s 2021 season features four operas, two apprentice scenes and a special debut concert with American soprano Angel Blue and the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra under the direction of John Fiore. The season opens with a fresh

interpretation of a standard work, The Marriage of Figaro, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The world premiere of The Lord of Cries by John Corigliano and Mark Adamo juxtaposes Bram Stoker’s Dracula and The Bacchae by Euripides. Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin returns in a lavish new production. Rounding out the season is the company premiere of Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Performances run from July 10 to Aug. 27. Learn more at santafeopera.org or call the box office at 505-986-5900 or 800-280-4654.

Join the Santa Fe Symphony for another compelling season on its brand-new digital platform at Santafesymphonytv.org. On May 30, Tate Meets Mozart celebrates the diverse culture of Santa Fe in performances of Francisco Braga’s A Sonorous

Dialogue to the Moon, Louis Ballard’s Ritmo Indio, a flute quartet by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and selections from Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout by Gabriela Lena Frank. The symphony’s imaginative digital series concludes on June 20 with Bach on Stage at the Lensic, featuring Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suite No. 6, Philip Glass’ Piece in the Shape of a Square, George Walker’s Lyric for Strings and selections from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, among others. Tickets are $20. Learn more at santafesymphony.org.
