Río Grande del Norte National Monument

Orilla Verde Recreation Area
Located near Pilar, between Española and Taos, this recreation area includes hiking trails, campgrounds, picnic areas, fishing access and swimming spots on a relatively calm stretch of the Río Grande, as well as the Orilla Verde Visitor Center.
Río Grande Gorge Visitor Center
This visitor center is located at the intersection of NM 68 and NM 570. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., although in COVID-19 times, it’s best to double-check before making the trip. For more information, call 575-751-4899.
Wild Rivers Recreation Area
Wild Rivers Recreation Area, about 20 minutes from Questa, has several trails and campsites and some of the best fishing in the state. Go north from Questa on NM 522 and turn left on State Road 378. The visitor center is about 17 miles from the turnoff, at 1120 Cerro Road. It is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Again, check before you go — hours may vary in COVID-19 times: 575-586-1150.
New Mexico Public Lands Information Center
The center offers information on access to and activities on New Mexico’s public lands, including Forest Service and BLM sites. There’s a downloadable map on the website.

Taos Fly Shop
Taos Fly Shop is a good place to find fly-fishing supplies and other outdoor gear. It also offers guided trips on the Río Grande and other rivers of Northern New Mexico. Owners Taylor Streit and his son, Nick Streit, have been fishing in the state for nearly four decades.
