HOORAY FOR HARVEY: BAR CASTAÑEDA & KIN

John Vollertsen, aka Chef Johnny Vee, is director of the Las Cosas Cooking School, which has been offering hands-on classes for over 20 years. He has contributed feature stories and columns to many newspapers and magazines.

If your travel plans find you covering less distance this summer, take a quick stay-cation in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and book a room — or just a table — at the lovingly restored Hotel Castañeda. Here, historic hotelier Fred Harvey is celebrated at the new Kin restaurant, due to relaunch in June, where chef Sean Sinclair, who did stints at Albuquerque’s Farm & Table as well as Santa Fe’s Luminaria Restaurant and Patio at the Inn and Spa at Loretto, has pulled out the culinary stops. The classy design of the room will take you back to the hotel’s glorious past, but the menu is as contemporary as can be found in Northern New Mexico — seasonal and local have always been Sinclair’s mantra. A more casual menu — including Sinclair’s award-winning Smash Burger — and some bracing cocktails can be found in the bar and terrace alongside the railroad tracks, in full view of the train station. Sinclair also recently opened a light fare and spirit shop that will make the easy drive even more rewarding. Local boy makes good — and delicious!
